A merger can take place through the transfer of engagements (eg membership, property) from one trade union or employers association to another or through an amalgamation. The Trade Union (Amalgamations, etc) Act 1964 and the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1974 require that certain statutory documents are submitted to the Certification Officer for approval. These files contain: notices, instruments, applications for the registration of instruments (records the members' votes) and statutory declarations of amalgamations/transfers of engagements.
