The Local Government Act 1985 abolished the Metropolitan County Councils and re-distributed their functions. Public transport functions went to joint Public Transport Authorities (PTAs). The Transport Act 1985 also removed Metropolitan County Councils' bus operating powers. The Public Transport Metropolitan Division was set up, out of the Passenger Transport Division, to oversee the transitionary period.
In 1994 the Passenger Transport Metropolitan (PTM) Division was absorbed into the Buses and Taxis Division.
