Description

County or diocese: York.

Grant: Clerical tenth from York province, 1327 Oct 13.

Document type: Assessment (communal) and writs.

Folios or pages: 2.

This file of two parchment membranes comprises the following documents: (1) A copy of a writ (m. 1) from Edward III to W[illiam Melton], archbishop of York, stating that he has been informed that there are benefices in his dioceses which have suffered destruction and damage caused by the Scots and he orders him to inform the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer what benefices these are and what their true value now is, so that the tenth granted to him by the clergy of York [in 1328] can be levied on them. Given at Lincoln on 29 March 1328; (2) A copy of a second writ (m. 1) from the same king to the same archbishop, ordering him to assign suitable men to re-assess the benefices in his diocese destroyed by the Scots and to certify the new assessed values to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, so that the same tenth can be levied on them. Given at Gloucester on 22 December 1328. It is endorsed that the assessment has been sent to the Exchequer; and (3) Another writ (m. 2) from the same king to the same archbishop, listing the ecclesiastical benefices and monastic temporalities in the diocese of York that need to be re-assessed, listing their values under the old assessment, and ordering him to certify their true values to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer by the octave of Martinmas (18 November). Given at York on 24 October 1328. On the dorse is the archbishop's response, listing the new values of these churches and temporalities. Given at Settrington on 17 November 1328.

All three documents are generally legible.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 24 October 2012.
