Description

County or diocese: Hereford.

Grant: Two papal tenths, 1322 April 20.

Document type: Receipt.

Folios or pages: 1.

This single parchment membrane is a receipt given by the abbot of Wigmore, collector in the diocese of Hereford of the biennial tenth imposed by Pope John XXII on the English clergy in the sixth year of his pontificacy (in 1322) and granted by him to Edward II, acknowledging receipt by the hands of Brother H. de T[e]mpliton of 8s. the moiety of that tenth due from the rector of the church of Bridge Sollers, for the first payment of the first year of that tax. Given at Wigmore on Monday after the feast of St. Gregory the Pope 1322 (that is, 14 March 1323), with two small pieces of his seal remaining.

This document was probably from the archive of Aconbury Priory, who owned this church (see the receipts at E 179/363/47).

The document is wholly legible.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 24 October 2012.
