Description

County or diocese: Worcester.

Grant: Clerical tenth from Canterbury province, 1316 Oct 11; Six papal tenths, 1312 April 3.

Document type: Warrant for collection.

Folios or pages: 1.

This single sheet of parchment is a writ from Edward II to the prior of Worcester Cathedral Priory, collector of the tenth in the archdeaconry of Worcester, in the diocese of Worcester, to be collected for two years, which had been granted to the same king by the clergy of the southern province in convocation in 1316, ordering him to transfer the money received by the prior of Llanthony by Gloucester (that is, Llanthony Secunda) as collector in the archdeaconry of Gloucester, in the same diocese, of the first year of the tenths imposed for six years on the English clergy by Pope John XXII (in 1312). He is to bring the money without delay to the king's Exchequer in York, together with this writ. Given at York on 10 July 1317. A final annotation records that he has been given a day to appear in Trinity term, recorded on the Exchequer memoranda roll.

The writ is endorsed that the prior of Llanthony Secuda had received £392 6d.ob. for the first year of the papal tenth which had been delivered to the Exchequer as ordered.

The document is wholly legible.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 23 October 2012.
