Description

County or diocese: York.

Grant: Clerical tenth from York province, 1316 Nov 23.

Document type: Receipt.

Folios or pages: 1.

This single indented sheet of parchment is a receipt given by William de Maldon, chamberlain of the Exchequer, to the abbot and convent of St. Mary's, York, as collectors [in the diocese of York] of the tenth granted to Edward II by the clergy of the province of York 'for the defence of the church against the Scots' (i.e., that granted in convocation on 23 November 1316). It acknowledges that he has received £40 sterling from the abbot and convent. From the date of the document, which was given at York on 2 July 1317, it is clear that it relates to the first payment of that tax, due to have been paid on 2 February 1417.

It is mostly legible, but some of it can only be read with the aid of a UV lamp.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 23 October 2012.
