Description

County or diocese: London.

Grant: Four papal tenths, 1309 May 18; Seven papal tenths, 1305 Aug 1; Six papal tenths, 1312 April 3.

Document type: Receipt(?).

Folios or pages: 1.

This fragment of a parchment membrane relates to the levy of tenths imposed by Pope Clement V, but not enough of the document survives to determine what exactly it is. Mentioned in the text is the abbot and convent of Waltham, subcollectors in the diocese of London, and the document seems to have been written by [the clerk of] the bishop of Lincoln, one of the principal collectors of the tenths imposed by Clement. More likely than not, it is a receipt given by the bishop of Lincoln to subcollectors, but it is impossible to verify this.

Similarly, it is impossible to ascribe it to a particular tenth, but it must relate to one of the tenths imposed by Clement, the earliest of which was due to have been paid on 24 June 1306. The document almost certainly dates from after that day.

What remains is wholly legible.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 23 October 2012.
