Description

County or diocese: St David's.

Grant: Three papal tenths, 1301 Feb 26.

Document type: Receipt.

Folios or pages: 1.

This single sheet of parchment is a receipt given by John de Drokenesford, keeper of Edward I's wardrobe, acknowledging his receipt from the prior and convent of Llanthony Prima, subcollectors of the papal tenths imposed for three years by the late Pope Boniface VIII, from 1301, in the archdeaconries of St. David's and Brecon, in the diocese of St. David's, of £4 4s.8d.ob., representing the arrears of these tenths collected by the same prior and convent from the prior of Ewyas Harold (6s.) and the bishop of Llandaff (10s.8d.), by the hands of Miles Pichard, lately sheriff of Herefordshire.

The document is not dated, but it must date from after the death of Pope Boniface VIII, which occurred on 11 October 1303, because he is referred to here as 'of happy memory', and it almost certainly also dates from after the second tenure of Miles Pichard as sheriff (he was succeeded in this post on 1 October 1305.

The document is wholly legible, apart from a hole on the left hand side, resulting in the loss of some text.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 23 October 2012.
