Description

County or diocese: various.

Grant: Three papal tenths, 1301 Feb 26.

Document type: Receipt.

Folios or pages: 1.

This single sheet of parchment is a receipt given by Edward I to R[ichard], bishop of London, and Master Bartholomew de Ferentino, canon of St. Paul's, London, principal collectors of the tenth imposed on the English clergy by Pope Boniface VIII for three years from 1301, acknowledging receipt from them of the sum of 500 marks, which they paid to John Drokensford, keeper of the king's wardrobe, in the king's name. The receipt was given at Westminster on 1 August 1302, under the king's writ of privy seal.

The document does not state to which payment it relates, but it is most likely to relate to the second payment of the first year of the tax, which was due to have been paid on 16 January 1302. This was the last instalment due before the date of the receipt.

It is wholly legible.

With a note in Italian in a continental hand on the dorse, probably written by Ferentino.

This piece number was added to the E 179 series from unsorted miscellanea on 23 October 2012.
