This bundle of four parchment membranes, all dating from the 1290s, comprises the following documents: (1) What appears to be a schedule of receipts (m. 1) for the levy of a tenth in the diocese of Hereford, perhaps that granted to Edward I in 1295, or perhaps for the papal tenths imposed from 1289. It lists four individual incumbents of benefices in the diocese, stating what they gave for a tenth. The schedule ends with a note that Roger, chaplain, acted as pledge. All the entries are crossed through, suggesting that the information was entered onto a roll or other record; (2) A similar schedule (m. 2) giving an assessment of the possessions of Master William de Coudray, clerk. It states, firstly, that he has a lay fee in the county of Oxford, valued at half a mark, the church of 'Esse' in the county of Cornwall, for which he gave 18s.8d. for a tenth, and the church of 'Halsale' in the county of Lancashire, for which he gave 20s. for a tenth, for which he asks for the protection of the lord king with writs directed to the sheriffs of those counties, according to this assessment. The schedule ends with a note that Master Peter de Insula acted as pledge, and again all the entries are crossed through. Whether mm. 1-2 are assessments or receipts, or for some other purpose is not clear; (3) A summary assessment (m. 3) of the possessions of the priory of Thornholm in Lincoln diocese for the tenth granted for the Holy Land, as the heading states. It gives a total of £11 14s. for spiritualities and £6 7s.9d. This would seem to be a summary assessment for the Taxatio assessment (for the six tenths imposed by Pope Nicholas IV in 1289). It ends with a sum total, and again, the document is crossed through; and (4) A summary (m. 4) of the total amount 'paid to the lord king for the last tenth for the temporalities of the prior of Llanthony by Gloucester £12 12s.7d.ob.; and for the same for the spiritual goods of the same prior £11 0s.8d., with a sum total at the end. The document is again crossed through.
Whether these documents are assessments, receipts or some type of interim account is unclear, but they probably relate to the 1295 tenth and/or the assessment made for the papal tenths imposed in 1289, and date from the 1290s.
They are wholly legible.
