Description

County or diocese: Wales (general).

Grant: Fifteenth levied in England, Wales and the Welsh Marches, 1290 April 1 x Sept 22.

Document type: Assessment (individuals). Includes names of individuals.

Folios or pages: 2.

This document comprises a detached section from an assessment of individuals, probably relating to the collection in part of Wales of the fifteenth granted to Edward I in 1290.

The document is incomplete and has suffered damage to various areas. Some sections are missing, and others are now faded and illegible.

No place names survive within the piece, but many of the personal names are distinctly Welsh, although many seem to be 'English'. There is nothing to indicate the area concerned, but further work on the personal names may possibly help to identify this.

Only part of the heading survives, mainly containing the names of individuals, perhaps the commissioners, but a section of a date appears to show that it was compiled in 20 Edward I or later (1291-2). This would be consistent with a Welsh identification, since it would have been drawn up at some point after 20 January 1291, the date on which this tax was extended to Wales.
