Administrative / biographical background

In December 2011, the UK's commitment to life sciences was launched and documented in the 'Strategy for UK Life Sciences'. In 2017, to support the strategy commitments, the Department for International Trade established the Life Sciences Organisation (LSO).  The LSO works with the UK life sciences community to navigate and facilitate overseas investment into the UK, from the earliest R&D collaborations through to clinical trials, commercial operations and partnerships. The LSO also offers trade support to companies seeking to export from the UK. As part of its strategy commitment the LSO, in collaboration with the Office for Life Sciences (OLS), worked with data partners to develop this online platform and provide direct connectivity to nearly 5,000 UK life sciences companies.

The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) champions research, innovation and the use of technology to transform health and care service. The new joint OLS was annnounced in March 2014 and was created from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department of Health (DH) joining their life sciences functions. The aim of the OLS was to make the UK the best place to invest in life sciences research, and to take advantage of the UK's science base and unique NHS to improve healthcare and contribute to economic growth.
