This series contains records of the Inquiry into the management of care of children receiving complex heart surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, originally held in JA 4.

These records were transferred to this series as part of the programme of migration of digital records at The National Archives in March 2008 and were presented via Electronic Records Online until 2014.

The records include the interim report, transcripts of hearings, submitted evidence, minutes of meetings and final report. Much of the material has been created in electronic format, or has been scanned into electronic format, and is available as a website.

Administrative / biographical background

The Inquiry into the management of care of children receiving complex heart surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary was set up following an announcement by the Secretary of State for Health in the House of Commons on 18 June 1998. The Inquiry panel, consisting of a chairman and three members, was chaired by Professor Ian Kennedy. Secretariat services for the Inquiry were provided by the Department of Health.

The final report of the inquiry was presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Health in July 2001.
