This series contains registered files (AX and SP Series) of the Department of Trade and Industry's Engineering Industries Directorate.

The AX file series relates to Airbus Programmes, Aerospace Policy and Long Term Finance for projects.

The SP file series relates to overseas financial support for vessels from Philippines, prospects and opportunities for Shipbuilding Industries in the UK, as well as the decommissioning of the North Sea oil storage and tanker loading buoy Brent Spar. The SP file series also contains the conclusions of a consultancy report on the future of UK Merchant shipbuilding commissioned by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Interdepartmental Shipbuilding Forum minutes.

The Engineering Industries Directorate (EID) was responsible for overall aerospace and defence industry policy including: aerospace strategy and trade policy; restructuring of the aerospace and defence industries; DTI/MoD relations and the DTI's interest in defence procurement issues; promoting the competitiveness of fixed wing aircraft including Airbus; the helicopter, aeroengine, aerostructures and light aircraft sectors; aerospace and defence equipment industries, land systems and ordnance; policy on exports and export strategy for the aerospace industry; and provides the Secretariat for the Aerospace Committee. The Directorate was previously known as Engineering, Automotive and Metals Directorate (EAM) and the Vehicles, Metals and Minerals Division (VMM).
