9127. Brigadier-General Archibald McArthur to Carleton. St Augustine. Victuallers and transports arrived on 'the 12th'. All possible diligence shall be used in embarking the barrack and provisional stores and troops. A number of the inhabitants have this day applied for conveyance of themselves and their 'negroes' to the Bahamas. Will give every facility. Two artillery men are gone to the block house at the St John's River and other places to prevent any waste being committed. Will give orders to Captain Abbot that the barracks and public buildings are delivered in the best order. Has some reason to believe a good part of the money Don Claraco got from the inhabitants of Providence was extorted.
