This series meets TNA's Acquisition Policy theme 2.2.1.5 Formulation and delivery of social policies, documenting the work of the Benefits Division. The selection is in line with OSP 5 The Administration of Social Security 1979-1991, specifically paragraphs 5.2.4, 5.2.6, and 5.3

Administrative / biographical background

The Validity of Marriage Unit was officially formed in 1967, however related functions and activities had been performed since 1961. The unit's place in the structure of the Departments has changed over the years; HQ in London, North Flyde Central Office, and Newcastle Central Office. The prefixes on the registered files had been allocated by the Central Filing Office as POD, OVB or TVP - however this was altered by the Unit and the files were allocated the VM prefix after their creation.
