Description

This series contains registered files of the Supplementary Benefits Division Branch 3 and successors.

The files relate to the policies of the branch, which were originally related to Supplementary Benefits in the following areas: immigration; students; resettlement units and re-establishment centres; liaison with associated voluntary bodies welfare arrangements and their relations with social services; board and lodging payments; hostels and residential homes; Polish homes (see AST 18, these had been in existence since the Second World War). Later the branch evolved to include Income Support policies on housing costs; people in education; people in long term care and the benefit aspects related to care in the community. The work became dispersed amongst other areas as time went on and the file office closed in 2003.

This series meets TNA's Acquisition Policy theme 2.2.1.5 formulation and delivery of social policies, documenting the Supplementary Benefits Division and policies regarding means tested benefits. The selection and destruction is in line with OSP 5, The administration of Social Security 1979-1991, specifically paragraphs 5.2 and 5.2.4.
