Description

This series consists of the registered files of the Small Firms Division and successors.

The ON files relate to the Innovation Technology Support Policy Committee as well as the strategy, planning and evaluation of theTeaching Company Scheme.

The IZB and QG files chart the establishment and growth of the Business Link network in England. Business Links offered advice primarily through a Personal Business Advisor, alongside other services such as Innovation and Technology Counsellor, Design Counsellor Services & Export Development Counsellor Services.

The IZB files also contains information on the Business Link model effectively ending in April 2000 when a newly formed executive agency, the Small Business Service, took over responsibility for delivering business advice on a local and National level.

Administrative / biographical background

The Small Firms Division was transferred out to the Department of Employment between 1985 and 1992. In 1992 the Small Firms Division returned to the Department of Trade and Industry and this move coincided with the President of the Board of Trade announcing the introduction of a comprehensive business advisory service which the Small Firms team would lead on. In 1994 the Small Firms Division merged with the Enterprise Initiative Division to become the Small Firms and Business Link Division (SFBL). In 1997 the Small Firms and Business Link Division became known as the Business Link Directorate.
