Description

Prisoner name: Robert Mason.

Prisoner age: 32.

Prisoner occupation: Builder.

Court and date of trial: Kent Lent Assizes March 1833.

Crime: Forgery of a bill drawn on William Calvert, prosecutor Mr Bennett.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character not known, married one child.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Retribution.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions from the convict one with 44 people of Great Yarmouth and one with 21 people of Woolwich; William Barth; G Rumble; Mary Ann Mason, wife; Mr Attwood; R H Mason, son.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character; poverty; not a large sum involved; he was duped; good conduct on hulks; first offence; exemplary conduct in the Colony; has served 30 years; is now old.

Other papers: Note from William Barth; Lord Lyndhurst (the Judge) on his verdict; note from Retribution enquiring whether convict is to be kept in the country; statement of the circumstances under which Mason was transported; letter from John Young enclosing letter from the Inspector of Police; J McClerie stating that Mason was convicted of forgery of a pardon in 1842 and sent to Norfolk Island; Frederic Rogers enclosing documents: death certificate from F Gore Browne; letter from J M Darvall, Stipendiary Magistrate at Bothwell Tasmania; W Nairn Comptroller enclosing the above; letter from R H Mason, son enquiring how to contact the widow.
