Description

Prisoner name: William Hodge and William Hughes.

Court and date of trial: Unstated.

Crime: Not attending militia training.

Initial sentence: 6 months imprisonment.

Annotated (Outcome): Remission prepared February 1828.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions from Lord Rolle; William Price commander Royal Navy; William Hughes' mother [unnamed].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Deserted the militia about 4 yaers ago when they were starving; recently returned from East Indies after working on the Tamar; penitent; both handed themselves in to the authorities.

Other papers: Two letters from William Cole Governor of Devon County gaol; letter from Robert and Ann Shelley the parents of Sarah Selley convicted at City of Exeter [Devon] Sessions [date unstated] of stealing a watch and sentenced to 14 years transportation.
