Administrative / biographical background

These records detail the Hampton Court Palace fire of 31 March 1986 and the subsequent recovery, planning and restoration work leading to the reopening of the King's State Apartments in July 1992. They include reports on the fire and its immediate aftermath, including Special Services, Fire Officers and Ministerial reports. Also included are planning and contracting documents, drawings and meeting minutes. The fire started in a Grace and Favour apartment lived in by Lady Daphne Gale, who lost her life. It severely damaged large parts of the William III King's State Apartments which were then restored to their 18th-century appearance, as designed by Christopher Wren. These records detail the operational and constructional elements of that work. During this period the rest of the palace remained open.
