The Department for Work and Pensions became custodians of the series in 2001 when it replaced the Department of Social Security, 1988-2001. The series was previously held by the Department of Health and Social Security, 1968-1988.

Selection and destruction information

This series meets TNA's Acquisition Policy theme 2.2.15 Formulation and delivery of social policies, documenting the activities of the Solicitor's Office and policies regarding benefits and social security. The selection is in line with OSP5 (The administration of social security 1979-1991, specifically paragraphs 5.2.5)

Administrative / biographical background

Within the Department of Health and Social Security, the Solicitor's Office constituted three separate divisions:

responsible for providing advice relating to pensions, benefits, and allowances;responsible for civil and criminal proceedings arising from social security matters; andmatters relating to health services and health legislation.

The division responsible for providing legal advice regarding health services was transferred to the new Department of Health Services in 1989.
