The Department for Work and Pensions became custodians of the series in 2001 when it replaced the Department of Social Security, 1988-2001. The series was previously held by the Department of Health and Social Security, 1968-1988.

This series meets TNA's Acquisition Policy theme 2.2.1.5 Formulation and delivery of social policies, documenting the work of the Finance Division (Social Security) (Branch 1 Financial Policy) and the financial implications of new and existing social security policies. The selection and destruction is in line with OSP 5 The administration of Social Security 1979-1981.

The Finance Division (Social Security) consisted of 4 branches, who were responsible for the following: Financial Policy (Branch 1); Financial aspects of contributions policy and Public Expenditure Survey-costings (Branch 2); National Insurance Fund, Parliamentary Estimates and Vote Accounts and departmental administration costs (Branch 3, North Fyde); Internal Audit (Branch 4).

The Division also consisted of the Operational Research Service (OPS), which was responsible for researching and providing information/analysis on health, social security, and personal social service subjects.
