Folio 449.
To: George Lowther, Clerk to the Selby Local Board, Selby [Yorkshire].
From: The General Board of Health.
Subject Matter: Draft letter acknowledging receipt of a letter of the 14 October 1857. The Board refer to the case of the South Wales Railway Cog v Swansea Local Board, Law Journal NS, Volume 24, part 2, February 1855, magistrates cases, Page 30 in which was decided that 'land used as a railway' was intended to include turntables and platforms that could properly be called the side of the railway platform, but warehouses, stations and similar buildings will have to be rated at the full value. It is suggested that a consideration of the case cited will enable the Selby Local Board to make the claims on the railway in accordance with the law. With reference to the second question, there does not appear to be any reason why a Local Board should not be assessed to and pay poor rates out of a General District Rate in respect of property held by them.
