Administrative / biographical background

Britain's relations with Oman go back to the mid 17th century, when the East India Company began trading there, but more formal British representation did not exist until the early 1800s. A succession of Residents, some British, some Omani, had their role formalised in 1867, when the consular powers of the British representative were defined in an Order in Council. They were appointed and were responsible to the Indian authorities until 1948 when responsibility passed to the Foreign Office. The Residents were often known as Political Agent or HM Consul, until in 1971, the Muscat post became an Embassy.
