Britain granted diplomatic recognition of the Republic of Chile in 1841. The bulk of diplomatic work carried out was consular and commercial, and although the consul general was in Santiago, most of the work fell to the consul in Valparaiso, in view of the significance of British involvement in Chile's maritime trade. The first British representative to be designated ambassador was Sir Henry Getty Chilton in July 1930 and an Embassy was first established in 1932.
