Captured ship: Jolie of Nantes, otherwise Handsome, but really the Castle of Ghent, master Peter Cardon.
History: as the Castle of Ghent was bound from Ostend to Nantes in May 1667, but was seized by a pirate and taken into St Martin's roads; there was manned by English prisoners of war and sent into Ireland but was taken on 17 June 1667 off Scilly by HMS Victoria's Prize [HMS French Victory] (Thomas Scott commanding) and brought into Plymouth.
Documents: a parchment commission cut in two; examinations, interrogatories; provides a detailed list of painted and carved figurehead etc and decorations on and in the ship, proving her identity as the Castle of Ghent.
