Description

Envelope, containing 9 cuttings [concerning British Railway locomotives, trains and rolling stock][items originally housed in ZSPC11/687/70]:

1) 'The Locomotive', manuscript dated '[December] 1948', 'Correspondence, Standardisation of Rolling Stock', from R A Marshall [arguing against a general policy of locomotive standardisation].

2) unidentified, undated publication [c 1956], 'New badge with the British Lion holding between the paws a silver locomotive wheel will be displayed on British Railways' locomotives [etc]', monochrome photographic illustration.

3) manuscript notation on reverse 'W D P 15.6.59', [Western Daily Press, 15 June 1959], 'The Bristolian sets up new record: 93 minutes from London', [diesel-hydraulic hauled train averages 76.2 mph], monochrome photographic illustration.

4) manuscript notation on reverse 'Evening Standard 15 [June 1959]', 'And the driver is just Perfect', [report on Bristolian service, as item 3, driver Alfred Perfect].

5) manuscript notation on reverse 'Evening News 15 [June 1959]', 'It's Hard Lines for the Southern: Their New Express Fails' [report on new electric service from Dover to London Victoria, and several other problems, 'Silver Arrow' service from London Victroria, Manston Aerodrome, Le Touquet, Paris Gare Du Nord], and report on Bristolian as item 4, locomotive named as Warship 'Benbow'].

6) unidentified, undated publication [c 1960], monochrome photographic illustration [cab and controls of unidentified British Railways steam locomotive, probably to illustrate newly installed automatic warning system].

7) unidentified, undated publication [c 1960], monochrome photographic illustration [probably same driver and controls as item 6] 'The engine-driver, hundreds of lives are in his hands, after six years drivers reach a maximum basic wage of £8 8s 6d a week'.

8) unidentified, undated publication [c 1959], 'Spick, span and speedy' [introduction of diesel locomotive 'D1' 'Scafell Pike'], two monochrome photographic illustrations.

9) unidentified, undated publication [c 1964], 'And now Locomania', [report on railway enthusiast visits to locomotive sheds, including removing nameplate].
