Description

Prisoner name: John Franks, aged 22, and William Ottoway, aged 30.

Court and date of trial: Franks, Surrey Quarter Sessions, Newington, October 1830.

Ottoway, Old Bailey Sessions, September 1829.

Crime: Franks, stealing watches.

Ottoway, stealing 16 geese.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Conduct good on board Fortitude hulk.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Thomas Patten, coroner, Rochester, Kent.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good conduct and character; coroner's jury recommended mercy.

Additional Information: Prisoners nurses on board Canada hospital hulk, Chatham, and cared for Henry Wheeler who died from injuries received from timber falling on him while unloading a ship in the dockyard.
