Description

Prisoner name: Elizabeth Christie.

Prisoner occupation: Milliner and dressmaker.

Court and date of trial: Ecclesiastical Court of Winchester, 1830.

Crime: Refusing to do penance in parish church of Portsea in compliance with decree of Ecclesiastical Court, relating to abusive language against neighbour, Anne Marton of Langport, Portsea, spinster, in June 1830, and non-payment of costs of £27 2s 9d.

Annotated (Outcome): Free pardon prepared 30 January 1834.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, wife of Janes Christie, boatswain in ship HMS Wellesley, formerly of Portsea, Hampshire, late of Devonport, Devon.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Time already served; state of pregnancy; dependent family.

Other papers: Copy of writ from sheriff of Cornwall for apprehension of the prisoner.

Examination of the prisoner taken at the insolvency hearing.

Letter from W Deally, Clapham, urging release of prisoner, although she should undertake her penance, but wishing 'heartily that these courts were released from such causes & such punishments'.

Two letters from J B Everest, Cornwall County gaol, Bodmin, expressing sympathy for prisoner and new born child and stating that the prisoner is willing to do penance in the gaol chapel.
