Description

Prisoner name: Robert Calder.

Prisoner occupation: Weaver.

Court and date of trial: Trial date not set. Original trial in 1830.

Crime: Returning from transportation after being convicted of stealing cloth from shop of Thomas Sweeting of Ripon, tailor, together with Robert Gregg, plumber and glazier.

Initial sentence: 14 years transportation.

Petitioner(s): Rosannah Calder, the prisoner's wife, undersigned by 77 inhabitants of Ripon.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Bad character of prosecution witness, Gregg; family dependent on his earnings.

Other papers: Letter from John Cartman of Ripon, coroner, forwarding petition.

Additional Information: Prisoner from Ripon, Yorkshire. Held in York Castle gaol.
