Description

Prisoner name: John Johnson alias John Coveney or John Johnson Coveney.

Prisoner age: 53.

Prisoner occupation: Former wine merchant and tavern keeper.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey Sessions, January 1834.

Crime: Forgery, namely uttering a forged cheque on Messrs Barnetts Hoare and Company, bankers, Lombard Street.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character not known. Respectable connections. Married, three children.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Conditional pardon granted, 1845.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions from the prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Illness (cold and deafness); good character; family dependent on his earnings; age; good conduct in New South Wales; first offence.

Other papers: Report on prisoner from George Gipps, Government House, Sydney.

Letter from James Stephen, Downing Street, forwarding report and second petition.

Additional Information: Prisoner ordered to Fortitude hulk. Transported to New South Wales on ship Roslyn Castle, arriving on 15 September 1834. Employed as clerk by Mr Gannon, wine and spirit merchant in Sydney.
