Description

Prisoner name: Louisa Harding, aged 32, and her daughter, Mary Harding (or Mary Margaret Harding), aged 11.

Court and date of trial: Wiltshire Quarter Sessions, Devizes, December 1833.

Crime: Receiving stolen goods (Louisa); larceny (Mary).

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation (Louisa); eight weeks imprisonment (Mary).

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, Louisa Harding, wife of Robert Harding.

33 inhabitants of Warminster, Wiltshire, including the five prosecutors.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Jury and prosecutors recommend mercy; good character; illness (pulmonary disease).

Other papers: Letter from Samuel Provis of Warminster, forwarding petitions and certificates.

Two surgeon's certificates from John Hoare of Warminster, surgeon, confirming prisoner's ill health, and also confirming illness of James Fowles, maltster of Warminster, that prevented him from testifying on prisoner's behalf.

Copy of baptism certificate of Mary Margaret, daughter of Robert and Louisa Harding.

Letter from John Ravenhill of Warminster, committing magistrate, giving details of case and stating that prisoner, Louisa Harding, 'is a very bad guilty woman'.

Affidavit of Martha White, wife of Jacob White of Warminster, carpenter and constable, relating to thefts committed by Mary Harding and her siblings with their mother's knowledge.

Letter from J G Bucknall Estcourt, chairman of Wiltshire Quarter Sessions, requesting that Mary Harding be sent to a reformatory.

Letter from William Ford Vance, lecturer and chaplain of Female Refuge, Hackney Road, on admission to institution of Mary Harding.
