Description

Prisoner name: Nicholas Goodhew, Ann Green, Robert Slocomb (or Robert Slocombe) and Harriet Walless (or Harriet Wallis).

Prisoner age: Goodhew aged 31, Green aged 18, Slocomb aged 26, Walless aged 28.

Prisoner occupation: Goodhew a waterman.

Court and date of trial: Kent Winter Assizes, Maidstone, December 1833.

Crime: Highway robbery at Dartford, Kent, and stealing a silver watch and £1 17s in money from William Robinson.

Initial sentence: [Death], commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Goodhew not known, Slocomb and Green represented good, Walless prostitute and kept a house of ill fame.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): 44 inhabitants of Isleworth, Middlesex.

The prisoner, Nicholas Goodhew, undersigned by Thomas Robinson, the prosecutor, and eight inhabitants of Dartford and district, Kent, including a former employer.

Two petitions from John Slocombe and Ann his wife, of Isleworth, the prisoner Slocombe's parents, the undersigned by 52 inhabitants of Isleworth.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): First offence; respectable family (Slocombe); good character (Goodhew and Slocombe); intoxicated (Slocombe).

Other papers: Letter from solicitors forwarding petition from prisoner Goodhew.

Letter from John and Mary [sic] Slocombe setting out facts of case, undersigned by three inhabitants of Isleworth, willing to testify to the prisoner Slocombe's good character.

Letter from W L Pearce, High Constable of Dartford, forwarding papers [missing] in favour of prisoner Walless, in Van Diemen's Land.

Additional Information: Walless from Dartford. Prisoners held in Maidstone gaol. Later transported.
