Description

Prisoner name: Elisha Sinkler.

Court and date of trial: York Lent Assizes, March 1833.

Crime: Accessory to wounding Thomas Dinsdale, sergeant of Ripon, with intent to murder, together with William Longthorne.

Initial sentence: Death. Day of execution 30 March.

Annotated (Outcome): Pardon prepared on condition of transportation for life, 29 March 1833.

Petitioner(s): Over 1000 inhabitants of Ripon, Pateley Bridge and vicinity, Yorkshire.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character.

Other papers: Letter from Thomas Fisher of Ripon accompanying petition.

Letter from Ralph Holgate of Pateley Bridge in favour of petition, with forwarding letter from Viscount Morpeth MP.

Additional Information: Prisoner from Pateley Bridge. Held in York Castle. Longthorne's sentence of death reprieved. John Sinclair, the prisoner's brother and fellow poacher, who committed the attack, at large.
