Description

Prisoner name: Thomas Walton.

Prisoner occupation: Overlooker of canal cutting work.

Court and date of trial: Stafford Lent Assizes, March 1831.

Crime: Stealing twelve sovereigns and ten shillings in silver from the dwelling house of William Lawrence on 8 March 1831.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, with affidavit from John Jones, contractor for canal cutting, the prisoner's employer, testifying to his good character, undersigned by 43 inhabitants of Wheaton Aston and neighbourhood, Staffordshire.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Innocent; first offence; good character.

Other papers: Letter from William Jellicoe expressing suspicion that the prosecutor involved in house breaking.

Three affidavits of Randle Walker of Wolverhampton, Thomas Lawson, wheelwright, and James Bayley, miller, both of Wheaton Aston, concerning money owed to them by William Lawrence, the prosecutor.

Two affidavits of Robert Shotton, victualler, and Thomas Shotton, gentleman, both of Wheaton Aston, concerning possible perjury by the prosecutor.
