Description

Prisoner name: Henry Stibbens (or Henry Stibbins or Henry Stabbins).

Prisoner age: 22.

Prisoner occupation: Servant.

Court and date of trial: Somerset Lent Assizes, Taunton, March 1831.

Crime: Stealing a horse, the property of John Beacham of Yatton, Somerset.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character etc good as far as known.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Richard Stibbins, tailor, and Sarah Stibbins of St Mary Redcliff, Bristol, the prisoner's parents, undersigned by 12 inhabitants of St Mary, Redcliff.

Richard Stibbins or Stabbins and John Beacham, the prisoner's cousin, the prosecutor, undersigned by six inhabitants of Bristol.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character; first offence; prosecutor requested payment not to appear to prosecute; unemployed; prosecutor recommends mercy.

Other papers: Affidavit of John Owen of St Mary Redcliff, law stationer, and Abraham Wattings of Bedminster, Somerset, glazier, testifying to the truth of the prosecutor requesting money of the petitioners, with covering letter from R Hart Davis.
