Description

Prisoner name: Jemima Small.

Prisoner age: 23.

Court and date of trial: Exeter City Sessions, April 1831.

Crime: Stealing printed cotton from the shop of Mr Varty, linen draper.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character bad. Prostitute.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by 58 inhabitants of Teignmouth, Devon.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Young child dependent on her; good character; respectable family.

Other papers: Letter from Viscount Ebrington, Exeter, forwarding petition and apologising for its dirty appearance as he dropped it 'into a puddle in the street'.
