The primary purpose of Research Assessment Exercise in 2008 (RAE2008) was to produce quality profiles for each submission of research activity made by higher education institutions (HEIs). The results were used by the four UK funding bodies to determine the funding for research to the institutions which they fund. Any HEI in the UK that was eligible to receive research funding from one of these bodies was eligible to participate.
The RAE2008 was conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL).
Research Assessment Exercises had been held in the UK in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2001 and 2008.
