The Health and Social Work Department was created on 1 April 1973 and was the successor to the Welsh Office, 'Social Work Service'. The Health Service Professional Division was also created in 1973 and was the successor body to Social Work Service, Health Professional Staff Division.
On 1 April 1985, the Health and Social Work Department, Health Service Professional Division was replaced by the National Health Service Directorate in Wales, Health Management Systems and Personnel Division. This latter body continued until 1 April 1996 when the Welsh Office Health Department, Health Services and Management Division was created.
The functions for all of the above bodies was to manage the personnel practice and systems of the Welsh National Health Service and industrial relations.
