4617. Lieutenant-General Alexander Leslie to Lieutenant-General James Robertson. A letter from Charleston acknowledging receipt of two despatches from General Sir Henry Clinton notifying the succession of command in his place and congratulations on his appointment [as governor of New York]. Is glad to hear of troops being sent to Jamaica under the nstructions of Sir Henry, but will require more. [Anthony] Wayne continues in Georgia and General [Nathanael] Greene remains west of the Ashley River. He has lately taken some of the militia, probably to fill the places of the Continentals who have retired. Fears raised by reports and General Maxwell's letters of possible attack by the Spanish fleet in Bahamas. Congratulations of the appointment in an enclosed newspaper.
