Folios 606-607.
To: The General Board of Health.
From: John Hawkins, Hitchin [Hertfordshire].
Subject Matter: Letter requesting a copy of Mr Rawlinson's report as to the system of drainage and water supply [for Hitchin], with an estimate of the expense, if possible, before the 25 March 1851, as he is one of those [members of the Local Board] who will then go out of office. Hawkins explains that 'in the present state of excitement amongst the small ratepayers, it is very probable that the new elected members may be all of the obstructive party, in which case nothing would be done in carrying out the works which we have made the best preparation by having a survey made under direction of the Board of Ordnance'. He also requests some procedural guidance respecting the repayment of the money to be raised for permanent improvements.
