Description

Folio 578.

To: William Stevens Jnr, Clerk (pro tem) to the Local Board of Health, Hitchin [Hertfordshire].

From: The General Board of Health.

Subject Matter: Draft letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 25 August 1850, referring to accounts of expenses incurred in relation to the application of the Public Health Act 1848 to Hitchin, and enquiring how soon such accounts will be paid by the Treasury. Stevens is advised that under Section 11 of the Public Health Act, only expenses made a charge on General District Rates assessable under the Act are expenses incurred by or under the direction of the General Board of Health or any Superintending Inspector. A copy of Ranger's observations on the accounts forwarded by Stevens is said to be enclosed herewith [not included in item]. It is explained that Ranger also requires a statement of the number of days Mr Shefford was engaged. It is added that no expenses incurred for work done by direction of any local Sanitary Committee can be charged on the rates or advanced by the Treasury. The accounts are said to be returned herewith in order that they may be altered to meet the conditions of Section 11 of the Act, and in order that Mr Shefford may state the number of days he was employed.
