Folios 561-562.
To: The General Board of Health.
From: William Stevens Jnr, Clerk (pro tem) to the Local Board of Health, Hitchin [Hertfordshire].
Subject Matter: Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 12 July 1850, enclosing the accounts relative to the preliminary inquiry at Hitchin; which are returned herewith [not included in item]. The Local Board are said to be of the opinion that the accounts are correct with the exception of that of Mr Oswald Foster; 'several other medical and professional gentlemen having attended Mr Ranger on his visit without having made any charge for so doing'. Stevens encloses a copy of a minute made at a meeting of the inhabitants of the Township of Hitchin held at the Town Hall on the 16 November 1848, which is said to be the order upon which the authority of which each item in his account was incurred up to the date of Mr Ranger's visit. He further explains that upon Ranger's visit he requested him to make enquiries and report to him the state of the drainage, water supply, privy accommodation etc., of the town, and that he also instructed Mr Shefford to take the level of the river. The other expenses are said to be consequent upon the formation of a Sanitary Committee and the introduction of the Public Health Act 1848 to the Township of Hitchin.
