Description

Prisoner name: Samuel Linfield [Samuel Lindfield].

Prisoner age: 52.

Court and date of trial: Sussex Spring Assizes March 1811.

Crime: Murder.

Initial sentence: Acquitted on the grounds of insanity. To remain in strict custody in the House of Correction at Petworth until HM's pleasure is known.

Annotated (Outcome): Warrant for his discharge prepared January 1829.

Petitioner(s): Prisoner and 9 certificates attached concerning conduct and mental health; Lord Egremont; prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Confined for 18 years during which time he has been quiet and well behaved and displayed no sign of 'mental derangement'; deeply contrite.

Other papers: List of Criminal Lunatics in Petworth Gaol January 1823; two copies of Sussex court records for 25 March 1811.
