Description

3363. Brigadier-General Francis McLean to General Sir Henry Clinton. A letter from Halifax [Nova Scotia] stating that the death of Mr Turner, late Pay Master, had prevented him from carrying out orders of 12 May but now sends corrected list of monies paid in Commissary Department up to 20 February 1780. Encloses copy of the warrant made by Lieutenant-Colonel Bruce which had been omitted in error. Balance due to 70th Regiment; memorials for Major Batt and Captain Bruce; copy of the resignation by Major de Witt, with certificate, and permission to go to West Indies due to health reasons. Weather conditions prevent provisions transports from sailing, so will wait for next opportunity to do so. Transports required to bring coals from the Spanish River. All quiet in province at present but if enemy should attempt anything, defence inadequate with many men unfit to serve. Complaints from Lieutenant-Colonel Campbell stating others were jumping the ranks infront of him. Has had declining health for some time but condition prevents further explanation at present. Sending Captain Smith with lists all warrants granted to December 1780.
