3631. Clinton to Robinson [at the Treasury]. New York. Acknowledges previous letters, and copies of memorials and papers. Has ordered an enquiry, and enclosures show that the memorials are founded upon misrepresentation which must have been made by the agents of the firm here. No application has as yet been made to him on behalf of Messrs Ashton & Co.'s claim, and he could not have paid any such without knowing it to be their Lordship's intention to make similar allowance to others who might make like claims. Other merchants in the garrison have cheerfully submitted to necessary regulations.
