This series consists of manuscript index cards detailing for the subject surname and initials (and, where appropriate, rank), date of joining and leaving SOE service, PAYE status where applicable, and, for each financial year, tax due and deducted, any under- or over-payment, and notes that the final tax accounts had been agreed. Where the subjects served overseas, the dates of departure and return are noted. Some of the cards note if the subject joined SOE from service abroad, and, if the subject was a civilian who subsequently entered the military, the date of commission is recorded.
The number of cards makes it clear that this index does not cover all SOE personnel who would have been considered for UK income tax, and the precise reason for creating this index and the population it covers is not now apparent.
