Folio 358: Commissioner Richard Beach, Portsmouth. He asks for a survey to be ordered on the Mary Rose, as he does not want to build on a rotten base, as they did with the Richmond, notwithstanding the complaints he made to Isaac Betts, William Stigant and Thomas Podd, Shipwrights. He thinks it was to protect the name of Sir Anthony Deane. He has sent to Southampton and Poole for oakum and oil. The Purser has recovered and will be sent to survey Mr. Day's timber. Is sending an account of Mr. Hawkin's contract. Mr. Fowles He has not complied with his contract for compass and knee timber. Report on the difficulties incurred in the yard due to the non arrival of Officers and the Ordnance's lack of hoys and lighters. Report on the progress of the Jersey, Advice, St. David, Oxford and Rupert. He has entered more Joiners and despite having all the hands from the Richmond they are still short of workmen. He fears the rules, put in place by Sir Anthony Deane for good husbandry must be broken. Asks for a supply of small masts and an order for new masts for the Duke.
