Description (What the record is about)
-
1399. Brigadier-General Prevost to Clinton. A letter from St Augustine containing a duplicate of the last one and accounts of expenditure with monthly returns for the District [of East Florida]. Doesn't contain Rangers as hadn't been able to get one. They receive no pay but do get provisions. Question raised to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel conferred by Governor Tonyn to Mister Brown, who commanded the Rangers, and their compliance to orders. Ensign Schodde went with a party of Indians to Georgia but they abandoned him and went home. Schodde joined Rangers under Captain Moore who was betrayed by some of his men, and deserted by others, was then wounded, taken prisoner, then murdered. Schodde escaped and joined two other Rangers and Creek Indians back to camp. Still no provisions for the garrison received or news of any, and a request for supplies sent as soon as possible. Request subsistence for the Carolina Royalists be sent as well as clothing as imminence of invasion was threatened, and everything needed to be done to defend the province. Experienced field officers were also required to command the 'raw' corps and steady them. Also sends a memorial from Major Allaz, and repeats his solicitations of 26 Jul.
